Paralives Island Town Challenge
You are a member of a a small research team, working on an uninhabited island to investigate to local flora and some medieval ruins. As you search the island and your discoveries are publicized, more attention will come to the island, attracting more researchers and perhaps a few entrepreneurs. Who knows, someday the island might become a thriving town!
This is a challenge I created to explore building a custom world and a small community in Paralives. For me playing in a preexisting world like Melino can feel a bit overwhelming, like there are too many characters and the world already feels finished and polished. I like to start small, and have the world grow over time. I also wanted to lean into the "Animal Crossing" style of gameplay the museum collectables in Paralives seem to be taking inspiration from.
The Challange has been devised based on the initial Early Access launch, and may be updated later based on updates, better ideas, or new mods that add more options!.
Setup
- Create an island, terraforming it as needed and dividing it into lots (you don’t need to do everything in one go - take it gradually).
- Create buildings:
- General Store
- Museum (make sure to include donation bin & Community Collection books here! It doesn’t have to be styled like a traditional museum, maybe it’s more of a research centre?)
- 3-5 small houses
- Parks & beaches as desired
- Create initial paras:
- Researcher (the player character)
- Museum Curator/Research Lead
- General store owner
- Place spawners around the world, using Buyable Spawners. Be liberal about it - Melino has nearly 200 spawners!
Playing the Challenge
The goal of the challenge is to build up the island over time from a small research settlement into a thriving town. New residents and buildings are unlocked by completing the Museum and Community centre collections.
When new buildings are unlocked, create a new resident to “run” the business (unless you have any existing paras who could viably run it themselves). If you like, they can own the building as well as their own house (or they might live at their business.) It’s up to you! Money cheats can be used when building community buildings (pretend they get a special grant).
Community Buildings can be created and made semi-functional using the following mods:
- Buy All Lot Types - so that you can purchase and and edit non-residential lots
- Little Businesses - lets you play shops as owned businesses that sell goods
- Change lot type - optional mod, you can also directly modify the .lot files in your save folder
- Edit Town Events & Lot Item Layers - lets you set up town events, like yoga!
Paras can only work at Companies they have unlocked, and may not get jobs that don’t have a corresponding rabbit hole. You can use the “help wanted” sign from debug mode rather than the phone to search for jobs. Unfortunately it isn’t possible right now to cheat a para’s job to the desired level, but e.g. the museum “curator” should work towards a job at the appropriate level.
Unlike community buildings, private residences must be funded with para’s own money. If they want to move in a bigger house or upgrade their homes, they need to work for it!
The world can be played rotationally, or you can pick a single para and only play them. If you play rotationally, only paras working at the Museum are able to donate items. Paras can focus on their careers, relationships, skills, whatever they like.
